I am a freelance science writer who has contributed to Nature, New Scientist,, Conservation, Science News, Science News for Students, and U.S. News & World Report. I earned a B.Sc. in biology from Stanford University, an M.F.A. in creative writing from Indiana University Bloomington, and a graduate certificate in science communication from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 2010, I won the American Geophysical Union's Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism. I'm a regular contributor to Conservation magazine and Nature's Careers section, and I blog at The Last Word on Nothing. I live in Seattle, Washington.

My specialties include writing about the environment, astronomy, the intersection of science and art, and science for kids.
