ALESSANDRA SIMMONS
(3rd Year Poetry) I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2005 where I studied Literature and Latin American/Latino Studies. Afterwards, I moved back to my hometown, Los Angeles, and I interned with a community organizing non-profit in South LA, helped with an after-school literacy program and worked as an administrative assistant in tall building downtown. During this time I discovered why most adults drink coffee every morning. After 3 years in LA, I decided to focus more on my writing and applied to grad school. Currently, I am the Associate Editor of Indiana Review. One of my favorite definitions of poetry is explained by Ezra Pound when he said, “Poetry is news that stays news.”
